What are you going to do?
The adverse health effects of inhalation of asbestos fibres have been known for years. It was not until the 1980s that regulations came into force in many, but not all, countries to stop the production and use of asbestos, also known as the asbestos ban. An asbestos ban, if effective, will prevent future exposure to asbestos. Yet, asbestos is still found in many applications such as homes, ships or cars. Processing these objects can lead to the release of asbestos fibres and exposure of workers and the general population. This raises the question of how best to protect workers and the general population from asbestos exposure from existing applications.
In this project, the effects of the prohibition (legislation) of exposure to asbestos on health are investigated by means of literature research (systematic review), with two sub-questions, namely:
1. Does an asbestos ban lead to a decrease in the production and use of asbestos in the jurisdiction of the ban compared to areas that do not enforce such a ban?
2. Does current prescribed personal protective equipment for workers for the removal and demolition of asbestos reduce exposure below the recommended limits?
For both questions we have registered a systematic review title with the Cochrane Work group (https://work.cochrane.org/) and a systematic review team will be formed with team members skilled in systematic review methods and experts in the field of exposure to and prevention of asbestos.
As part of this project, we will first develop and publish a protocol according to the Cochrane methodology and perform the systematic review according to this protocol.
As a researcher “Cochrane systematic reviews of the effects of prevention on exposure to asbestos” you will be assisted by a project team consisting of Dr. Jos Verbeek, Dr. Henk van der Molen, Dr. Jan Hoving, Prof. dr. Dr. Carel Hulshof and other experts. You will also be part of the Cochrane Work team at AmsterdamUMC, location AMC.
What we expect from you?
• Demonstrable knowledge about and affinity with the subject exposure assessment and / or prevention of (asbestos) exposure as evidenced by education and / or work experience.
• Knowledge about and affinity with Interrupted Time Series (ITS) design is a plus
• Graduated researcher in occupational hygiene, health / movement sciences, medicine, or an equivalent study
• Knowledge, experience, or affinity with developing, executing, writing and publishing systematic reviews of evidence-based guidelines development
• Experience with GRADE is recommended.
• Affinity with the field of work and health.
• In addition to being a knowledgeable researcher, you are also communicative, able to work well together as well as being able to work independently.
Where are you going to work?
As a researcher “Cochrane systematic reviews of the effects of prevention of exposure to asbestos” you will work at the Public and Occupational Health department of Amsterdam UMC at the AMC location in Amsterdam. It is the largest university department in the field of work and health in the Netherlands. The institute stands for high-quality research and education in the field of work and health with a focus on improving practical skills of medical professionals, prevention of work-related disorders and occupational diseases and improving the work ability of workers.
As a team member you will contribute to the activities of Cochrane Work, including contributing and attending the weekly meetings where other Cochrane reviews are discussed of similar (exposure / prevention) areas.

- Depending on education and experience, the salary is between € 2,911 and € 4,615 gross per month based on 36 hours (scale 10 CAO UMC) based on an employment contract with the AMC but the work can be done remotely.
- The salary is exclusive of holiday pay (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%).
- This concerns a foreign (Italy, INAIL) funded research project of 16 months with a part-time appointment of 32 hours, effective on 01-06-2021 at the latest. Although this is a temporary appointment, you will develop knowledge and experience with regard to systematic review development in the field of exposure assessment and prevention for which there is an increasing need.
